CABINET DECIDES ON DISASTERS

The Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Minister Sydney Mufamadi presented a report to Cabinet on the disasters caused by flooding in the Northern Province, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North West yesterday.
Heavy rains in these provinces left a trail of destruction causing damage to roads, bridges and other infrastructure leaving thousands of people destitute.
On the basis of this report Cabinet developed a comprehensive strategy aimed at assisting the affected provinces.
Cabinet:
- Took note of the extent of the damage that was suffered as a result of the heavy rains since 8 February 2000;
- Took note of the actions taken by the various spheres of government to address the problem;
- Directed all affected Ministries to develop specific action plans, which would thereafter be consolidated by the Inter-departmental Disaster Management Committee;
Approved in principle:
- Assistance to the Northern Province and Mpumalanga to fund their urgent needs;
- Assistance to the SANDF to fund its operational costs in the affected areas; and
- Support the provision of direct financial assistance to the Kruger National Park.
Cabinet further:
- Pleaded solidarity with communities that have been hit by this unfortunate disaster;
- Expressed its condolences to the bereaved families;
- Commended the provincial and local emergency services for their efficient and timely interventions during rescue operations.
