MINISTER FRASER MOLEKETI COMMENDS PUBLIC SERVANTS WORKING IN DISASTER AREAS

Issued by: GCIS

16 February 2000

The Minister for Public Service and Administration, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi today commended public servants working to relieve the plight of communities devastated by the recent spate of natural disasters.

These events have led to areas in four Provinces being declared disaster areas.

"Our hearts go out to the individuals, families and communities who have been affected by the natural disasters of the last few months" said Minister Fraser-Moleketi. "I commend the exceptional work by our public servants: those on the front line and those working in the background to relieve the plight of the thousands of people affected by the disasters".

"Public servants in the emergency services, health and welfare officials, the South African Police Service, the South African National Defence Force as well as volunteers from non- governmental organisations and ordinary civilians have worked tirelessly to stabilise the hardest hit communities. These men and women must know that their dedication and effort is appreciated".

The Minister calls on all public servants to work with their communities to restore service delivery in the affected areas.
