MEDIA STATEMENT ON THE ISRAELI AIRSTRIKES LAUNCHED AGAINST HEZBOLLAH IN LEBANON

10 FEBRUARY 2000

Following a meeting yesterday, 9 February 2000, with Israeli Ambassador Uri Oren, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Aziz Pahad, said South Africa views with concern the escalation of Israeli military actions in Southern Lebanon and the targeting of civilian structures. He called on all parties to exercise restraint during this difficult stage. It is imperative he said that a cycle of violence is avoided in the area as this will only serve the agenda of those who have no wish to see peace in the region and who wish to jeopardise the process of peace-making. The Deputy Minister therefore appealed to the parties involved to exercise utmost restraint and not lose sight of the ultimate goal being the establishment of peace in the Middle East.
