08 February 2000
A graduation ceremony for inmates who have completed the Young Prisoners Satellite Education and Training programme will be held at the Thohoyandou Prison Conference Hall, in the Northern Province on Wednesday, 09 February 2000 at 10:00 am.
This is a National Youth Commission pilot programme conducted in partnership with Orbicom, South Africa's leading digital satellite signal distribution company. The purpose of this programme is to assist the Department of Correctional Services' programme for young people incarceration and to complement other efforts to counter the escalation of crime in our country.
The programme is intended to develop the skills and prospects of young prisoners beyond the limitations of prison life and crime. It has consisted of weekly satellite broadcasts into three prisons throughout the past year which are, namely, Thohoyandou (Northern Province), Hawequa (Western Cape) and Westville (KwaZulu-Natal). Some of the inmates who participated in this programme will be released later this year and will be granted small loans to implement their business plans which were developed as part of the programme.
