The Minister of Labour is pleased to announce that Cabinet today appointed Advocate Rams Ramashia as the Director General of the Department of Labour.

Advocate Ramashia joined the Department in January 1999 as Deputy Director General of Internal Management and Operations, in which capacity he oversaw the restructuring of the Department's provincial offices to ensure the more effective implementation of labour legislation and public service delivery.

On 4 December 1999 he was appointed Acting Director General following the appointment of the Department's former Director General Sipho Pityana as Director General of Foreign Affairs. Advocate Ramashia has brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the Department in the area of strategic management and the law. He is an advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa and has an LLM in advanced labour law. Prior to joining the Department he was president of the South African NGO Coalition (Sangoco). He also acted as a legal adviser to a number of non-governmental organizations, assisted in drafting the Non-Profit Organisations Bill and was head of the legal task team of the then Deputy President's Advisory Committee on the National Development Agency.
