The South African Government has followed with interest developments in the Cote d'Ivoire since the pre-Christmas Coup d'etat.
The recent announcement by General Guei on the establishment of a Consultative Constitutional and Electoral Commission and the intention to hold presidential, legislative and municipal elections by 1 October 2000 is welcomed.
The South African Government is encouraged by the announcement that the proposed Commission will complete its proposals for a draft constitution and electoral code by 31 March for submission by referendum to the electorate during April 2000.
The South African Government calls on all parties to work together constructively and in a spirit national interest towards a peaceful and successful completion of the transitional process.
