The Statement by the MEC for Education, Ignatius Jacobs on the resignation of the Superintendent General, Mr James Maseko, and the appointment of Mallele Petje as the Acting Superintendent General.
The MEC for Education, Ignatius Jacobs, would like to regrettably announce the resignation of James Maseko, the Superintendent General of Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) from 1st February 2000.
James Maseko has been involved with the GDE since its inception in 1995. He has played a pivotal role in the amalgamation of the former apartheid education departments into one department with a vision to provide learners of Gauteng a quality education that will build our nation into a non-racial, and a non-sexist democracy.
Mr. Maseko has fought for a better education system, throughout the years of our struggle to free our country from Apartheid's Bantu education, which forced majority of our people into bondage and advanced white supremacy.
When he took over as the Head of the Gauteng Department of Education, he used his management and administrative skills to lay a foundation to rid our education system of the legacy of apartheid. He used his knowledge of non-racialism, non-sexism and democratic principles making our education system, learner centred.
He played an important role in the drafting of all policies and legislation that are intended to transform our education system.
James Maseko has not only used his knowledge, experience and expertise in the GDE but to the entire Gauteng Provincial Government.
The staff of GDE and the entire GPG, Education fraternity, Business will loose a champion of education transformation. However, his legacy of a culture of work, creative and innovative methods will only ensure that we move forward with the transformation of our education system in Gauteng.
The MEC has appointed Mr. Mallele Petje to be an Acting Superintendent General from the 1st February 2000. Mr. Petje will assume all the powers and functions of the Accounting Officer until the post is filled on a permanent basis.
Ronnie Swart, Chief Director for the Southern Region of GDE will act in the position of Deputy Director General. Mr. Petje and Mr. Swart, who have both worked with Mr. Maseko, are experienced as individuals and collectively. We have confidence in their ability to maintain the same work ethic and standards.
We wish Mr. Maseko well in his new career move, and we are confident that he will continue to serve the people of our country and advance the transformation of our society in a different capacity.
Thank you.
