South Africa deposited its instrument of accession to the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child on 2000-01-21
The Ambassador of South Africa in Ethiopia and Permanent Representative at the OAU, Ambassador JKN Mamabolo, on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Africa, Dr Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma, deposited the instrument with the Secretary General of the OAU, Dr Salim Ahmed Salim on Friday, 2000-01-21 at 16h30.
The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child was adopted by the Twenty-six Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the OAU on 11 July 1990 and has entered into force on 29 November 1999 after adherence thereto by 15 Member States.
South Africa signed the Charter on 10/10/1997 and Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma ratified the convention on 7 January 2000 in Pretoria and by so doing undertook to faithfully observe and fulfil the stipulations contained therein.
The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child is as of today 2000-01-21 ratified by 19 OAU Member States.
