FIRST WOMAN STATE ATTORNEY FOR THE WESTERN CAPE

Cape Town 11 January 2000

Mrs Marcelle June Luter, a former Deputy State Attorney at Pretoria's State Attorney's Office, has been appointed the State Attorney of the Western Cape with effect from the beginning of January 2000.

Based in Cape Town, Mrs Luter is the first woman State Attorney to be appointed in the Western Cape. She was admitted as an attorney in 1984 and her legal practice consisted largely of litigation, civil and criminal matters.

As Head of the State Attorney's Office, she faces a mammoth task of implementing the ideals of the constitution and ensuring that administration of justice is accessible to all. However, she says her 14-year practice as a private attorney will help her meet the challenges of her new post. Her vision is to render an effective and efficient state legal service for State departments.

Mrs Luter has also a thorough understanding of corporate and contract lawwork and has for many years specialised in Supreme Court litigation in these areas.
