On Wednesday, 22 December 1999 at 14.00, Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar, will pay a visit to the Red Cross Childrens Hospital, Cape Town. After speaking as guest speaker at the opening of the new premises of fruit exporters, Capespan, in Durban on 6 September 1999. Minister Omar requested Capespan to make a donation to the Red Cross hospital’s accident trauma unit. Capespan agreed and on 22 December at 14h00 will hand over the cheque in the presence of the Minister.
Minister Omar made a similar request of AIC Conference Organisers, who handed the Minister a cheque which also will be handed over for the benefit of St Joseph’s Home, one of the sister institutions of Red Cross.
On Saturday, 18 December, Minister Omar, accompanied by MEC for Transport, Kwazulu Natal, Mr S’bu Ndebele paid visits to accident victims at King Edward and Addington hospitals in Durban.
On Tuesday, 21 December, Minister Omar was in the Free State Province. Together with Premier Direko and MEC for Transport, Mr S Malebo, he participated in distributing Arrive Alive pamphlets, addressed two groups, including taxi operators, visited two road blocks and a hospital. He again stressed the need for tough law enforcement but also urged all road users - owners, drivers and pedestrians - to exercise responsibility and discipline and to obey the road laws and rules of the road.
