ANNOUNCEMENT OF YEAR 2000 READINESS

17 December 1999

Issued by: Justice and Constitutional Development

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development is proud to assure the Public that it is ready to enter the new millennium. A considerable amount of time and resources has been spent, since 1997, to prepare all our systems to ensure a continuation of services to the public. The Department has taken all possible precautionary measures to ensure that our hardware, software and systems are Y2K ready. However, we cannot guarantee uninterrupted supply of other services sourced from other providers such as, for example, water and electricity that might have a destabilising effect on our service delivery. We have set up contingency plans at all our centres to deal with any interruption that may occur at the dawn of the new millennium. We are also confident that we will be able to deal with any unlikely event that may lead to a disruption to any of our core services.

A national Co-ordination network that stretches to all our regional centres has been set up to ensure continuous service delivery throughout millennium changeover. All our centres will be monitored from 31 December 1999 to 3 January 2000 to ensure that there will be business as usual as from 4 January 2000. Members of the Public are at liberty to contact any of the Department's regional offices at the telephone numbers as advertised in the respective local telephone directories. An emergency helpline that will operate through the weekend has been set up at the National Office. The helpline numbers are as follows: 012- 326 8053; 012-325 8587; 012-3151301. The Department can also be contacted through facsimile transmission at the following number 012- 323 9417.
