MINISTER MOOSA MEETS GERMAN COUNTERPART

Minister Valli Moosa, Minster of Environmental Affairs and Tourism met with Mr Jürgen Trittin, German Federal Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, to discuss the implementation of the Bilateral Agreement on Environmental Co-operation between the Republic of South Africa and the Federal Republic of Germany.

The environmental issues and challenges facing both countries were discussed, which highlighted several areas of commonalties. The Ministers agreed to co-operate in the following areas:

Cleaner production and waste management with special focus on the rehabilitation of mines and environmentally friendly energy technologies Eco-tourism and sustainable resource management Co-operation on multilateral engagements such as the Climate Change and the Commission on Sustainable Development The formulation of a detailed work plan for the above focus areas will form part of the discussions to be held at the next (second) SA-German Bi-national Commission on 7 – 8 February 2000 in Pretoria.
