MINISTER OF DEFENCE TO VISIT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

The Minister of Defence, Mr Mosiuoa Lekota, and his wife will be paying an official visit to the United States of America at the invitation of the United States Secretary of State.

The aim of the visit is direct dialogue to further cement the already broad and strong Defence relationships between South Africa and the United States.

During the visit, Mr Lekota will be received with full military honours at the Pentagon where senior military officers and Defence administration officials will also brief him.

Some of the other highlights of the visit will be:

A visit to the Commander-in-Chief, US Atlantic Command at the Norfolk Naval base;

A wreathe-laying ceremony at the Arlington National Cemetary;

A visit to the US Army War College where he will be briefed at the Peacekeeping Institute Command;

A visit to the Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station where he will be briefed by the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force; and

Meetings with high-ranking South African Foreign Affairs officials as well as officials from the United Nations.
