President Thabo Mbeki has on behalf of the people and the Government of South Africa congratulated Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad on his re-election as Prime Minister of Malysia.
"The people of Malysia have, in the recent general elections, overwhelmingly expressed their support for your Government’s policies and demonstrated their confidence in your leadership to guide them into the new millennium," President Mbeki said in the message to the Prime Minister.
A congratulatory message was also sent to New Zealand’s Prime Minister -elect Helen Clark. "Your coming to power ushers in a new era in New Zealand politics. It is evident that the policies and ideals that you have always stood for, now enjoy the support of the majority of the electorate," Mbeki said.
The President expressed confidence that their victory would further enhance the close relationship that South Africa has with the two countries.
