In June this year, President Thabo Mbeki created a new Ministry - The Ministry for Provincial and Local Government, headed by Minister F S Mufamadi. The predecessor to the Ministry was the Ministry for Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development.
As part of a comprehensive restructuring process, the former Department of Constitutional Development has now been renamed the Department of Provincial and Local Government.
The restructuring of the Ministry and Department of Local government is aimed at improved service delivery through improved alignment of functions among the three spheres of government.
The Ministry and Department shall concentrate on key programmes pertaining to the development of provincial and local government and intergovernmental relations.
The function "constitutional development" is being transferred to the Ministry and Department of Justice.
The new logo for the Department is still being developed in line with the creation of a new corporate identity for government as a whole. The Department of Provincial and Local Government will thus continue using the logo on this letter until the first quarter of the year 2000.
All the contact details for the Ministry and Department of Provincial and Local Government remain the same.
