The Interministerial Security Committee held its first meeting at Protea police station in Soweto on Tuesday.
Present at the meeting were Acting President Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Ministers of Safety and Security Steve Tshwete, Intelligence Joe Nhlanha, Correctional Services Ben Skosana, Justice and Constitutional Development Penuell Maduna, Deputy Ministers of Defence Nozizwe Madlala-Routledge, Home Affairs Lindiwe Sisulu, and Justice Cheryl Gillwald.
The committee deliberated on problems affecting the criminal justice system.
This regular meeting of the committee was a symbolic statement government was making that it wanted to take government closer to the people.
It was an expression of the commitment made by government to ensure dynamic interaction with communities. The meeting preceded the launch of Project Harmony, a community police project aimed at improving community-police relations and it was held in Jabulani Amphitheatre.
This is not the last meeting of the committee in our community. Visits of this nature are being planned for various parts of the country.
