MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, DULLAH OMAR, RETURNS TO COURT - TO MOVE ADMISSION OF HIS DAUGHTER, FAZLIN, AS AN ATTORNEY

30 November 1999

Minister of Transport, Dullah Omar, who is also an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa, returns to the High Court for the first time in more than six years (since his appointment as Minister of Justice). On Friday, 3 December 1999, he returns to the High Court, Cape Town, where he practised for many years.

Minister Omar will be appearing in court before Judge President King to move for the admission of his daughter, Fazlin, as an attorney. Fazlin has followed in the footsteps of her father. She obtained an LLB degree at Minister Omar's alma mater, the University of Cape Town, and like her father, did articles to qualify as an attorney.

Minister Omar himself practised as an attorney for 22 years and then practised as an advocate for just under 10 years. Minister Omar first opened practice in District Six under humiliating conditions. He was forced to apply for a group areas permit which had to be renewed annually. After a few years, he was thrown out of District Six and was forced to move to Woodstock. Fortunately, Fazlin will not be faced with the same difficulties and will be able to choose to practise where she pleases. She hopes to take up a position with a firm of attorneys in Cape Town. She did her articles with Hofmeyer, Herbsteins, Gihwala, Kluver and Walker.

Minister Omar and his wife, Farida have three children. Fazlin is the only daughter. Her sons, Kemal and Rustum, are both graduates of the University of Cape Town. Rustum is with African Harvest and Kemal with Metlife, both dealing with asset management.
