STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI ON BOMB BLAST IN CAPE TOWN

Issued by: Office of the Presidency

29 November 1999.

President Mbeki will be briefed by Safety and Security Minister, Steve Tshwete and his colleagues as well as the Commissioner of Police after their visit today to the scene of the bomb blast in Cape Town.

The President is horrified by the explosion which hurt innocent people, including women and children.

This dastardly act is the work of desperate elements for which South Africa has no room. Government assures them that they are going to be pursued, captured and punished to the full extent of the law.

The President has instructed the Minister of Safety and Security to pay particular attention to this and other incidents which have occurred in the Cape Peninsula.

Government brings to the attention of the perpetrators of this heinous act that most of the previous bombing incidents have been successfully investigated by the law enforcement agencies. It is therefore a matter of time before the current perpetrators are brought to book.

The President wishes all those who were injured in the blast a speedy recovery.
