INVESTIGATION INTO A DIVISION OF THE NIA

Issued By The Ministry For Intelligence Services

25 November 1999

Following a discovery of irregularities in Special Projects Unit, the then Director General, of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) launched an internal audit of all the NIA operational structures. This internal audit of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) found indications of possible irregularities pertaining to the procedure of acquiring vehicles within a division of the NIA.

After consultation with the Office of the Auditor General, a full investigation was launched in order to determine the facts, taking into account all relevant aspects of the matter, In order to ensure the integrity of the investigation, a general manager of the said division has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Ministry for Intelligence Services, as the body responsible for the superintendence of the civilian intelligence services, takes seriously any allegation of irregularities within these organisations and pro-actively investigates these. Should there be proof of such irregularities, the law will take its course.

Whilst this investigation is unfolding, we appeal to the public to avoid unnecessary speculation and public trials through the media, pending the outcome of the investigation. Whilst this is an aberration and not the norm within the NIA, the internal audit continues and will detect whether there are any other incidences of irregularities within the organisation. It again needs to be stressed that the overwhelming majority of its members selflessly and conscientiously serve to protect and promote the interests and security of our nation.
