STATEMENT ON THE AUDITOR GENERAL'S REPORT ON Y2K READINESS OF MUNICIPALITIES

Issued by the Department of Provincial and Local Government

19 November 1999

The Star newspaper of 19 November 1999 has reported that the Auditor General, Mr Henri Kleuver, tabled a report in Parliament to the effect that 200 local authorities had been identified as high priority areas for Government's Year 2000 Task Teams as far as Y2K readiness was concerned.

These figures were inaccurate as they were based on statistics of more than a month ago at which time the figures that were tabled indicated 182 high-risk municipalities. As at 13:00 today municipalities that require priority attention are down to less than 100 municipalities and decreasing rapidly.

It must be realised that this is a rapidly changing environment with municipalities completing projects on a daily basis. The Year 2000 Task Team remains confident that their target of 100% compliance in respect of Y2K readiness will be reached by the end of the year. At this stage a readiness level of 94% has been reached overall.

Updated figures on compliance are obtainable on a weekly basis from http://www.local.gov.za
