SPECIAL MEETING OF SADC HEALTH MINISTERS' MEETING ON HIV/AIDS

The Department of Health in collaboration with WHO and UNAIDS is hosting a special meeting of SADC Health Ministers to discuss critical issues on HIV/AIDS from 04 - 05 November 1999 at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

The areas that have been identified for discussion are Nevirapine, vaccines, safety of blood transfusion, access to anti-retrovirals and maternal to child transmission of HIV.

The objectives of the meeting are the following:

• to inform the Ministers and their technical advisers on latest developments in the identified areas
• to allow Ministers to review the results obtained from research studies done in the region, on a mother to child transmission of HIV, especially Nevirapine
• to review the costs and access of anti-retroviral drugs

The meeting is a follow -up of the HIV/AIDS conference that was held in Zambia in September this year. It is attended by 14 SADC Health Ministers and Health Minister from Rwanda together with their senior officials and HIV/AIDS and STDs programme managers.
