MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MBEKI ON THE PASSING OF MWALIMU JULIUS NYERERE

Issued by: Office of the Presidency

14 October 1999

It is with deep sorrow that we learnt of the passing away of Mwalimu Lulius Nyerere this morning.

On behalf of the South African government and the people of South Africa, we express our sincere condolences to Mama Maria Nyerere, the children, the Government and to the people of Tanzania. We could ourselves sense the sadness and concern for Mwalimu in Tanzania when we visited recently. Indeed, as news reports of his failing health came in, it was a concern we shared.

At the height of his career, Mwalimu dedicated himself to the upliftment of his people and remained committed to justice and equality. Throughout his life he was a pillar of strength to oppressed people all over the world. All of us admired him for his wisdom, his intellect and his integrity.

Mwalimu's memory will forever be treasured by the freedom-loving peoples of the world for the dedication he showed to the liberation of the downtrodden and oppressed. The best way for us to pay tribute to this illustrious son of Africa is to re-commit ourselves everyday to the cause of peace, stability and a better life for all of Africa's inhabitants.

South Africans should honour his memory by ensuring that the relations between Tanzania and South Africa continue to benefit our people and bring lasting peace to our region.

We have ordered that, with effect from Friday, 15 October 1999 to Tuesday, 19 October 1999 the national flag will fly at half mast throughout the country in honour of the late President Julius Nyerere.

We have also been informed that our Public Broadcaster will also take steps to honour the memory of the late President.

Undoubtedly, Parliament will also take the necessary measures to mark the departure of this great African patriot.

Thabo Mbeki
President of the Republic of South Africa
