MEDIA STATEMENT ON VISIT TO INDIA BY MINISTER OF HEALTH

The Minister of Health, Dr Mantombazana Tshabalala-Msimang, will visit Delhi from 11 to 13 October 1999, to participate in the International Conference on Heart Health in Developing Countries, which is being organised by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. The Conference is sponsored by the World Health Organisation and the World Heart Foundation.

Dr Tshabalala-Msimang will deliver an address on Heart Health: A Vision for the new Millennium - Perspective of a Policy Maker on 11 October 1999. The Conference brings together nearly 800 scientists and policy makers from all over the world, to focus attention on the rapidly growing public health problem of heart diseases affecting people in the developing countries. The Conference will seek to generate global and local action to counter this threat. South Africa's recently enacted landmark legislation on the control of tobacco will be of great interest to the delegates who will be developing tobacco control strategies as part of their efforts to protect and promote heart health in countries which are now experiencing health transition.
