The South African Government has condemned, in the strongest possible terms, reports of violations of the ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Government was reacting to news that tanks were used to attack Rally for Congolese Democracy(RCD) positions,12 km from Kabinda in the DRC, early yesterday morning.
The South African Government calls on the Organisation of African Unity and the Chairman of the Joint Military Committee to establish who the perpetrators are so as to enable the region to take appropriate action against those who have demonstrated themselves to be so implacably opposed to peace in the DRC. The Government also calls on all parties and signatories to the ceasefire agreement to put firm measures into place in order to prevent such actions, including the immediate implementation of the Joint Military Commission, which was created to deal with such violations.
