HERITAGE DAY SHOWCASES DYNAMIC SOUTH AFRICAN TALENT

16 September 1999

The gardens of the Union Buildings in Pretoria will erupt with the vibrant sounds of some of South Africa's hottest bands during the national Heritage Day celebrations on September 24.

Top musicians, Bayete, kwaito star Mdu, and Durban band Squeal will feature in a free mini-concert on the lawns of the garden. It is anticipated that thousands of fans will participate in the festivities.

The concert is among an entertaining list of events - including a parade and an art exhibition - planned for the national festivities, which Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister for Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, said would be the most spectacular to date.

"We have designed a celebration which will be meaningful and enjoyable for all South Africans," said Dr Ngubane.

Internationally renowned Bayete is best known locally for lyrics that confront pertinent social issues and call for brotherhood among Africans.

True South African talent, and one of the best-known names in kwaito today, Mdu is popular for his skill at using music as a medium to communicate with his audience.

Coastal band Squeal, made South African history by releasing the first independently financed, recorded and produced album which went on to score four number one hits.

The concert begins at 11am and admission will be free, in the spirit of Heritage Day, for all to enjoy the festivities. Food and soft drink vendors will be available until the concert finishes at 3pm.

Metrorail has offered a 50% reduction in the cost of rail travel for passengers buying a citybound ticket between 8.30am and 10.30am on Friday, September 24. These passengers will receive a free return ticket for use the same day only between 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
