We note with concern that there is a misunderstanding with regard to the statement issued by the Public Service and Administration Minister, Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, on behalf of the government of South Africa (dated 7 September 1999); on the public service salary negotiations and the stance of government regarding the principle of collective bargaining. The statement confirmed this commitment.
We would like to reiterate that this government believes in, and fought for, the very existence and recognition of the process of collective bargaining. No representative of this government, therefore, would do anything to undermine or attack this valuable tool of our democratic society.
