The South African government has learnt with great shock of the news of the tragic killing of Mr M Meki, the Vice-Counsul of the Zimbabwean consulate, that happened in Johannesburg last night. The South African government condemns the callous and barbaric act in the strongest possible terms, and through the South African Police Services has launched an immediate investigation into the killing with the hope that these criminals will be brought to book as quickly as possible. The government further calls upon the public to co-operate and assist the police in their investigation. President Thabo Mbeki, on behalf of the South African government and people, has expressed his sincere condolences to the government of Zimbabwe as well as the family of Mr Meki.
