GAUTENG PREMIER'S STATEMENT ON THE 7TH ALL AFRICA GAMES

Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government

Gauteng Premier, Mbhazima Shilowa received a briefing on the first day of the 7th All Africa Games.

The Premier is satisfied and happy that the games went off on a good note in a friendly and healthy competitive spirit.

The Premier congratulates all those who took part in the first day of the Games - participants, officials, organisers, support staff and spectators for their splendid efforts to ensure the success of the games so far.

The Premier noted with regret and disappointment an unfortunate incident at the Games village in Alexandra.

While the Premier believes in the right for workers to engage in labour action he believes any such action should be conducted in a peaceful and respectful manner.

In this regard the Premier condemns in the strongest terms the conduct of a section of the CWU workers who took part in the protest action outside the Games village. This and any other such conduct by any one of us only seek to undermine the efforts of all those who have worked very hard for the success of the All Africa Games.

The Premier calls on all the people of Gauteng to extend their warm welcoming hands to the visitors who come from all over the African continent and to continue supporting the All Africa Games during the next ten days.
