EARTHQUAKE IN GREECE

The South African Government has learned with shock of the consequences of the earthquake in Athens during the afternoon of 7 September 1999. A letter of condolence was forwarded today to Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos from President Thabo Mbeki expressing the shock and sorrow of the South African Government and people concerning the earthquake.

The availability and readiness of the South African Police Service Search and Rescue Dog Unit has been offered to assist in the ongoing rescue operation in Athens, should there be a need for their services.

Indications at the moment are that no South African citizens have been affected by this tragedy.
