APPOINTMENT OF NEW SOUTH AFRICAN HEADS OF DIPLOMATIC MISSIONS

Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is pleased to announce the appointment of the following Heads of South African diplomatic missions:

Ms Maite Mohale - New Delhi, India

Ms Mohale (36) was an active member of the ANC Women's League between 1991 and 1993, serving inter alia as Regional Deputy Chairperson and as member of the NEC. In the period 1993-4 she was Assistant Regional Election Coordinator of the ANC Northern Transvaal Branch. Ms Mohale has also had 10 years' experience as a teacher and was involved in community organisations in the Northern Province. She served as South Africa's High Commissioner to Malaysia between 1995 and 1999.

Ms Mohale holds a Diploma in Pedagogics from the University of the North and a Secondary Education Diploma from the University of Vista.

She is married with four children.

Dr Magang Phologane - Accra, Ghana

Dr Phologane (43) served in the ANC Department for International Affairs in Lusaka from 1988 to 1989, after which he lectured Company and Commercial Law at the Botswana Institute for Administration and Commerce (1989 - 1990). Between 1990 and 1994, Dr Phologane held positions at the DBSA, the Education Opportunities Council and the Office of the President as an RDP consultant. During 1996 he was appointed as Director in the Department of Foreign Affairs where he currently serves as Acting Chief Director for Southern Africa.

Mr Sisa Ngombane Kinshasa - Democratic Republic of Congo

Mr Ngombane (44) joined the ANC in exile in 1980. Between 1982 and 1988 he worked underground in political and military structures in Lesotho and Botswana. In 1989 he became ANC Deputy Chief Representative in Lusaka and was ANC Chief Representative to Belgium and the European Community between 1991 and 1994.

He joined the Department of Foreign Affairs in 1995 and was appointed South African Ambassador to the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire. He was also accredited to Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso on a non-residential basis.

Mr Ngombane studied towards a BSc degree at the University of Fort Hare before going into exile. Between 1980 and 1982 he did a Diploma in Social Sciences at the Moscow School of Social Sciences. He completed a BA degree in Political Science with the Open University, United Kingdom in 1994. He also completed a course in International Relations and Diplomatic Practice at the Institute of International Relations in The Hague. In November 1993 he was attached to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for one month.

Mr Ngombane is married, with two children.
