The Department of Foreign Affairs welcomed the signing at Sharm-el-Sheikh on 4 September 1999, of an agreement between Israel and Palestine on the further implementation of the Middle East Peace Process.
Both sides are to be congratulated and commended on this significant development; and while the path towards a final status agreement will doubtless be a difficult one, the agreement reached at Sharm-el-Sheikh bodes well for the type of cooperation which alone can result in the achievement of a just and lasting peace.
