THE INTER MINISTERIAL COMMITTEE OF SAFETY MINISTERS (IMCS) ON RECEIVAL OF PAGAD MEMORANDUM

Issued by: GCIS

CAPE TOWN 21 AUGUST 1999

The IMCS as government organ is aware of the concerns and deliberations surrounding the issue of crime in our country.

IMCS therefore appreciate the presentation of this memorandum by PAGAD.

It should be noted by PAGAD and the people of the country that the IMCS appreciates the concerns expressed regarding the combating of crime and the thriving lawlessness in our country.

The IMCS maintains an assurance that Government will not retreat in the war against crime and in achieving this goal the co-operation of all law abiding citizens is a major requirement.

The IMCS wishes to further express and stress that government does not believe and will not accommodate vigilantism and that no one will be allowed to take law into their own hands. Furthermore people of this country must co-operate and fully support the law enforcement agencies to deal with the perpetrators of crime.

It should also be noted that vigilantism could only create a situation condusive for further criminal activities.

Deviation from the norms of the social order of this country is not what the IMCS and law abiding citizens believe in. The government and people of South Africa want to see an end of crime against citizens, women and children and property.
