ERROR IN REPORTS ON STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF COMMUNICATIONS IRO THE POST OFFICE STRIKE

Issued by: Ministry of Communications

In the light of two inaccurate broadcasts on Dr Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri's statement on the post office strike at her press conference yesterday, I would like to clarify:

First, the Minister did not say that the strike would have "no effect" as apparently reported by Radio Metro. She said, in response to a question about the effect on the strike on the new strategic management partner, that she did not believe it would impact on our international relationships as it was purely a labour dispute. She agreed that it would disrupt services locally.

Second, the SAFM morning news reported that the Minister had said she would intervene in the strike only if it became protracted. What she actually said was that she would intervene in the strike only if invited to do so.

As we do not know the source of these errors, we are putting out this advisory in the hopes of putting the record straight.

Thank you
