ZUMA & MANDELA TO VISIT INANDA SEMINARY IN INANDA

Issued by: Office of the President

12 August 1999

Deputy President, Jacob Zuma and former President Nelson Mandela will visit Inanda Seminary in Inanda north of Durban on Friday, the 13 August 1999.

Inanda Seminary, well-known private girls' high school that has produced thousands of well-respected women in various fields, nearly closed down due to a lack of funds. A group of ex-students decided to approach former President Nelson Mandela for financial assistance to keep the school going. Although the school has been declared a heritage site, its buildings are very badly dilapidated and it is in dire need of funds to meet running costs and to pay teachers.

Former President Mandela has found sponsors who are willing to help bring the school to its former glory. He will visit the school tomorrow and will be accompanied by Deputy President Jacob Zuma as well as the sponsors.

The Seminary is now 131 years old and has produced amongst other leaders professionals, Ministers and Deputy Ministers like Baleka Kgositsile, Manto Shabalala-Msimang, Eilleen ka Nkosi Shandu, Nozizwe Routledge, Stella Sigcau etc. The visit by Madiba is significant in that it takes place during the week when women are being honoured. Inanda Seminary is a school that greatly empowered a large number of woman leaders from the whole of South Africa and beyond.
