The UN Under-Secretary-General and the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Dr KY Amoako, will meet the South African President, Mr Thabo Mbeki, on Friday 13, during his official visit to South Africa from 12-15 August 1999. He will be accompanied by Messrs Peter Dacosta, Communications Advisor and Robert Okello, Director of the Lusaka-based Sub-Regional Development Centre for Southern Africa.
The ECA is the regional arm of the UN, mandated to support the economic and social development of its 53 Member States. Its activities are designed to encourage sustainable socio-economic development in Africa and to increase economic cooperation between African countries and the rest of the world.
Dr Amoako is of the view that this official visit will provide a useful opportunity to further consolidate cooperation between the Republic of South Africa and the ECA.
Dr Amoako is scheduled to meet with the Minister of Communication, Dr Mtsepe-Cassaburri, and is also likely to meet the Minister of Education, Prof Kader Asmal.
