Issued by: Northern Province Office of the Premier
02 August 1999
The Northern Province government has decided to retire over 2 000 employees over the age of 60 years and above. The law provides for the employer (government) to retire employees over 60 years earlier than the age of 65 provided that the retirement package is calculated as if the employee is retired at the age of 65.
This is done in an effort to reduce the size of the civil service and the wage bill of the provincial government. Those affected have been informed in writing last week and given a month's notice. They are to retire by the end of August 1999.
This was also found that there are a few employees well beyond
the age 65 and are still in the service. These employees will be
retired, but the Director General and Heads of Departments will
investigate possibilities and taking disciplinary action against
officials who are found to have neglected their duties to retire
personnel who reached retirement age.
