LAUNCH OF CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT OUR WOMEN/PLEDGE TO UNITE AGAINST WOMEN ABUSE

Issued by: GCIS Following the recent violence against women and children in the West Cape Province, the Government Information Centre in consultation with the Provincial Education Department, Provincial Corporate Affairs will launch a campaign sensitising the people in the province about the rights of women and children. The campaign will kick-off on 2 August at Cape Town Civic Centre and finish on 9 August 1999.

The pledge on 2 August is part of a week long action that will culminate in a Cosatu led march on August 9 and the events organised by other organisations on the Parade on the same day.

National Ministers, the Premier, Mayors, leaders of political parties and NGO's will be asked to publicly commit themselves to protecting the rights of women and children.

Prof Kader Asmal, Minister of Education, will be speaking on the responsibilities of men towards protecting the rights of women.

The Premier, Gerald Morkel, will also speak and will be the first person to sigh the pledge. What is significant about this event is that all three tiers of government are in partnership with communities.

Other events are planned for August 9, in Worcester, Paarl (Mbekweni) Mitchell's Plain and Oudtshoorn.
