President Thabo Mbeki has learnt with shock and sadness of the deaths of 18 miners at the Mponeng gold mine near Carletonville on Thursday, 29 July.
The president expresses his hope that no stone will be left unturned to determine the exact cause of the disaster, as well as to determine whether safety standards were adhered to.
The president is of the conviction that the rescuers will do everything in their power to ensure that those still trapped underground are brought to safety.
The president extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, friends and colleagues.
