Issued by the Minister of Transport Dullah Omar:
The Minister of Transport Dullah Omar has expressed concern that it has become necessary for the opening of the N4 Nkomazi Toll Plaza to be postponed.
He noted the concerns of the concessionaire TRAC as well as those of local communities, and Minister Omar urged all parties to make appropriate compromises to enable the Toll Plaza to be opened.
It is the last of the three Toll Plazas on the South African side on the N4 leading to the border between South Africa and Mozambique and it is imperative for regional development that the opening of the Toll Plaza should not be delayed.
Minister Omar will be visiting Mpumulanga tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday 28/7/1999) to meet with various parties urgently. He has already met with concerned groups and will meet with them, as well as the provincial government, to ensure that the opening of the Nkomazi Toll Plaza can proceed without delay.
Minister Omar commended all parties for ensuring that they operate within the framework of the law. Unlawful activity of any kind will not be tolerated.
The object of Minister Omar’s visit to Mpumulanga will be to facilitate the opening of the Toll Plaza, but also to see in which way the concerns of the local communities can be addressed. Minister Omar appealed to all parties to ensure that no unlawful action or activity of any kind takes place whilst the current problem is being resolved.
