Issued by: Gauteng Provincial Government
The Gauteng Executive Council will hold its first ordinary meeting since the beginning of its term on Wednesday 21 July 1999 at the Kempton Park Civic Centre.
The Executive Council will receive and consider reports from various task teams set up earlier by Premier Mbhazima Shilowa. Among these would be the report of the task team led by MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs, on a plan for sustainable development and job creation.
The Executive Council will take important decisions to give effect to the pronouncements made by the Premier in his address to the Provincial Legislature on 28 June 1999.
The Premier announced on the 28th June 1999 that a number of initiatives would be put in place as part of the provincial government's programme for job creation, infrastructure investment, and economic growth and development. These, he said, would include the finalisation of areas identified by the national and provincial government for Spatial Development Initiatives, linked to a housing programme including rental stock.
To take forward the initiatives, the Premier announced that he had established a task team, led by the MEC for Finance and Economic Affairs, to develop a plan that would be presented to the Executive Council on 21 July 1999.
In keeping with the commitment to remain closest to the communities, the Premier has decided that the venues for the meetings of the Executive Council should rotate around the six regions of the province.
This would also help enhance the relationship between the Executive Council and the municipal councils as well as with the local communities.
The meeting in Kempton Park will start at 08h00 and end at 12h30.
The Executive Council will have lunch with the Kayalami Council from 13h00 to 14h00. At 14h30, the Premier will address a media briefing on decisions of the Executive Council. The last item is a meeting with community leaders.
