STATEMENT BY JAKES GERWEL

Issued by: Office of the President As previously announced I shall be leaving the civil service at the end of my contract on 30 June 1999.

I shall be taking up on a percentage basis the position of Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at the University of Cape town, primarily attached to the Department of Afrikaans. Discussions are underway between the University of Cape town and the University of the Western Cape to convert that position into a joint appointment. When that is finalised the universities will make the appropriate announcement.

The conflict resolution body whose Board of Trustees I chair, the African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Conflicts (ACCORD), has invited me to assist in the co-ordination of its African preventative diplomacy programmes. I shall mostly be operating from the Cape Town office being opened by ACCORD, seeking to combine the activities of my university position with those at ACCORD.

I am the Chancellor of Rhodes University and as Ministerial appointee a member of the Stellenbosch University Council. Both these will offer the opportunity to further participate in university life.

In addition I shall on a non-executive basis be associated with two or three private sector concerns, each of which will make its own announcement in that regard.
