The Transport Industry which is one of the most important safety and business industries, was wrongly projected by the media in the past by saying that the industry will not be Y2K compliant in the year 2000. The National Department of Transport (NDOT) created a forum to monitor the Y2K process in the Transport Industry. This forum comprises of representatives of NDOT (all divisions) and other role players in the transport fraternity. These includes the South African Maritime Safety Authority, South African Civil Aviation Authority, National Roads Agency, Cross-Border Road Transport Agency, Road Accident Fund, South African Rail Commuter Corporation, Air Traffic Navigation Services, Airports Company of SA, TRANSNET and the Departments of Transport in the nine provinces.
At a forum meeting held at NDOT recently, all these representatives confirmed that they are on track with their project plans and critical systems will be Y2K ready come the end of November 1999. The Y2K process will be monitored for at least the following year. All representatives are currently busy to set contingency plans in place in case something happened. The National Y2K Decision Support Centre is also involved in the process and monitor the Transport Industry closely.
NDOT forms also a part of the SADC Y2K Committee to share information to ensure that all countries will be either compliant or that contingency plans will be in place. This is in the interest of the whole of Africa. The Transport Industry will be in a position to supply safety and reliable transport in the year 2000 and onwards.
