The South African Government welcomes the agreement reached yesterday to cease hostilities in Yugoslavia.
Furthermore, it welcomes the adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 on Kosovo and the decision to resort to political efforts to resolve the crisis. It is an important step by the United Nations Security Council, as the primary organ responsible for international peace and security, in its efforts to secure the following: - an end to the conflict in Yugoslavia and repression in Kosovo, - the safe and free return to Kosovo of all refugees and displaced persons under the supervision of the UNHCR and - the eventual economic development and stability of this crisis-torn region.
