PUBLIC AWARENESS CAMPAIGN FOR THE OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC PROTECTOR

20 May 1999

The European Union Foundation for Human Rights in South Africa is funding a national public awareness programme for the office of the Public Protector. This one-year project, to be launched on 20 May at the African Window in Pretoria, will be conducted joi ntly by Lawyers for Human Rights and the office of the Public Protector.

Groups to be targeted include the Public Service, government agencies and parastatals, and NGOs active in rural areas. The project, which will consist of three phases, will focus on the training of target groups, by means of workshops to be held in all nin e provinces.

The project aims ultimately to increase the ability of the target groups to access the office of the Public Protector through having an informed Public Service and by empowering rural communities to seek redress and be protected against corruption and malp ractice more effectively.

Development of course material for workshops will include amongst others, the production of a video about the office of the Public Protector and its operations. An evaluation and assessment of the project, together with the development of a resource handb ook for State institutions, parastatals and NGOs will also form part of the project.
