ASSISTANCE TO THE FBI BY THE NATIONAL CENTRAL BUREAU OF INTERPOL PRETORIA IN THE SEARCH OF WANTED PERSON AN AMERICAN CITIZEN MR STEVEN NELSON DELIT

A member of the public who was surfing the website of the American Department of Justice on the Internet, discovered that a person that was circulated on this website was residing in CAPE TOWN. On 1999-05-10 the information was the passed on to the American Embassy in Cape Town.

Upon further investigation by the FBI office of Legal Attache, American Embassy in Pretoria it was established that the person concerned was a Mr Steven Nelson Delit an American citizen who was wanted by the FBI on two arrest warrants. Firstly for the theft of 1,2 million dollars in the STATE OF NEW YORK and the second warrant of arrest a federal warrant for the flight to avoid prosecution.

The information was passed on to the office of the National Central Bureau of Interpol Pretoria, South African Police Service and Detective Inspector Danel van der Merwe was assigned to the investigation.

Members of the South African Police Service in Cape Town acceded to the request and subsequent investigation revealed that the person had left the country for AMSTERDAM, NEW YORK on 1999-05-13.

Upon his arrival in New York, Mr Steven Nelson Delit was arrested on 1999-05-14, by the FBI.

The use of modern technology has once again contributed to this successes and cannot be over emphasised.

This is once again a shining example of how the diligence and awareness of the public can assist the police in addressing the issue of crime and it also reinforces the need to ensure mutual cooperation and assistance with international policing agencies.
