MBEKI ON BUSINESS DAY ARTICLE

Issued by: Office of the Deputy President T. M. Mbeki

In an article in today's edition of Business Day newspaper entitled "New body to woo investment" which reporting on the Deputy President's address to an Investec seminar yesterday, there is an obvious typographical error in the concluding sentence which reads: "Equality, there was intent to affect "the independence of statutory bodies such as the Reserve Bank".

The omission of the word "no" before the word "intent" may give the impression that the Deputy President intends to affect the constitutional independence of statutory bodies such as the Reserve Bank.

For the record, the Office of the Deputy President would like to reiterate that the Deputy President has no intention to change the independence of the Reserve Bank or any constitutionally established bodies.

The Deputy President abides by the letter and spirit of the constitution and respects the independence and integrity of all constitutional bodies including the Reserve Bank.
