TRC ON DISAPPEARANCE OF NOKUTHULA SIMELANE

Issued by: TRC

May 14, 1999

The amnesty hearing into the torture and disappearance of an ANC member, Nokuthula Simelane will start on Monday, May 17, at the Central Methodist Church, corner Small and Pritchard Street in Johannesburg.

Simelane was lured into a trap from Swaziland by a police agent, Norman Mkhonza or "Scotch", who was also an ANC member and an underground operative of the Swaziland unit. She was arrested at the Carlton Centre in 1983.

She was taken, firstly to Norwood Police Flats and then to the Northern Farm in Thabazimbi and was never seen again. Willem Coetzee, Anton Pretorius, Norman Mkhonza, Peter Lengene, Frederick Mong, Sgt. Sefuthi and Radebe are said to be last persons to see her.

The Simelane matter has some startling revelations about heavy infiltration of ANC underground activists in the underground by active agents of the Soweto Protea Security Branch in the early to mid 1980's.

Another matter on the roll is that of university of Transkei academic, Herbert Mbali, who was abducted from Lesotho by Willem Schoon and DK Genis. 80 year old Trevor Baker and Hannes Gloy have been implicated by Schoon in his application.
