Issued by: Department of Health
The Department of Health welcomes the donation by UNAIDS, towards the research project on the effects of AZT in maternal transmission, being undertaken at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
Contrary to recent media reports, the government has not changed its policy regarding the use of AZT for pregnant women. While government cannot afford providing AZT at this stage, is however, encouraging further research on the effects of AZT in reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission.
Health Minister, Dr Zuma and the Department of Health have never developed a policy preventing donations, sponsorship or support for scientific research projects.
The Chris Hani Baragwanath project, therefore enjoys the support of the Minister and the Department.
In an effort to address the growing problem of mother-to-child HIV transmission, the Department of Health, would like to encourage those planning to have babies to test for HIV/AIDS before pregnancy.
However, we wish to reiterate that AZT is not a cure for AIDS. There is also no scientific evidence in South Africa or elsewhere, which supports the view that AZT is effective in stopping HIV transmission following a rape incident.
In endorsing the Deputy President's message to the youth, we urge them to delay sexual activity for as long as possible. We also encourage the use of condoms and invite all sectors of society to strengthen the HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
