The Deputy President, Mr Thabo Mbeki, will visit Soweto on Tuesday, May 4, 1999 to meet communities to discuss crime and corruption issues.
This visit follows various incidents, which have been reported by community members on problems pertaining to crime and corruption at various institutions e.g. Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, schools and the business sector in Soweto.
The objective of the Deputy President's visit is to obtain first-hand information on issues around crime and corruption by interacting directly with the communities with a view of intervening.
The Deputy President will be accompanied by the National Minister for Safety and Security, Mr Sydney Mufamadi, MEC for Safety and Security in Gauteng, Mr Paul Mashatile, Gauteng Premier, Dr Mathole Motshekga, Provincial Commissioner of SAPS, Commissioner Sharma Maharaj and Soweto Area Commissioner, Assistant Commissioner Ephraim Beetha.
