OMAR ON VISIT OF CHIEF JUSTICE OF BANGLADESH

MEDIA STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, DR A M OMAR, ON THE VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE AND THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF BANGLADESH.

The Chief Justice, the Honourable Judge AMT Afzal and the Minister of Justice, Mr Abdul Matin Kharsu, of the People's Republic of Bangladesh will visit South Africa from the 25-28 April 1999, at the invitation of the Minister of Justice, Dr Dullah Omar.

The two, who will be accompanied by a representative of the World Bank in Bangladesh, Mr Mohsin Alikhan and the Minister's secretary will arrive at Johannesburg International Airport at 10h10 tomorrow. They will be met by the Chief Justice of South Africa, the Honourable Judge Ismail Mohamed, the Minister of Justice, Dr Dullah Omar and Sheikh Nazeem Mohamed and other prominent members of the Muslim Judicial Council.

While in South Africa the delegation will hold discussions with Chief Justice Mohamed, Justice Chaskalson, the President of the Constitutional Court, the Minister of Justice, Dullah Omar and officials of the Department of Justice, the Human Rights Commission, Judge Ngoepe of the Pretoria High Court and the Chief Magistrate of the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

The purpose of the visit is to examine the possibility of judicial co-operation, discuss law reform and to acquaint the delegation with the South African legal system in a post apartheid society.

In Cape Town, the delegation will pay a visit to Sheikh Joseph's Kramat at Faure, Imam Haroun's grave, attend prayers at the Habibia Mosque and tour the Islamia College in Lansdowne. Chief Justice Mohamed, Sheikh Nazeem Mohamed and members of the Muslim Judicial Council will accompany the delegation.

The delegation will travel to Washington on the 28 April 1999 at 17h40 en route to Trinidad for a meeting of the Commonwealth Ministers of Law. Minister Dullah Omar will join the delegation at that meeting.
